Nikolo-Arkhangelskoye is one of the largest cemeteries serving Moscow, on the eastern edge of the city in the Balashikha district, and the site of one of Europe’s biggest crematoria along with an extensive columbarium.
Because of the columbarium, a significant share of the requests we receive here are not about a grave at all but about a niche — which needs a different kind of care and a different kind of photograph.
What grave care at Nikolo-Arkhangelskoye actually involves
For burial plots, the work is standard for a large open cemetery: weeding, mowing, washing the stone, levelling the mound, clearing leaves in autumn.
For columbarium niches, the work is cleaning the plaque and the surrounding wall surface, replacing flowers in the holder, and photographing the plaque so that the inscription is legible. Plaque lettering fades and the gilding wears — re-gilding the lettering is available and is done on site.
The site is very large and the walk from the entrance to a distant section can take twenty minutes. That matters when you are paying for a visit, and it is one reason the seasonal package works out cheaper here than separate trips.

Can you care for a columbarium niche, not a grave?
Yes. Cleaning the plaque, replacing flowers, re-gilding worn lettering and a photograph of the niche with the inscription legible.
We do not know whether our relative was buried or cremated.
The administration records show both. We submit the request by full name and year, and tell you what the records actually say.
Is a new monument possible here?
Yes for burial plots, including granite complexes, and access for delivery is good.
